E-portfolios

to practice reading for main idea

to encourage students to use e-portfolios as a source of information

to develop their own professional tools

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: One computer per groups of two students, with an Internet connection.

PREPARTION: Print the handouts. Prepare two sets of cards with rubrics and put them into envelopes. You will need glue to stick the cards on the worksheets. Put the sheets with names of types of e-portfolios on the board.

PROCEDURE

1. Ask the students to read the definition of an e-portfolio and to name all possible professions which might use it.

2. Explain that e-portfolios have rubrics according to type. Point to the blackboard and name the types of e-portfolios. Give students the envelopes with cards and let them divide the cards between them. Ask some students to describe the content of his or her rubric.

3. Put the students in pairs at the computers. Send them to the site http://insight.eun.org and let them read about the types of e-portfolios and decide where to place each rubric.

4. While working student should stand up and stick their rubrics they have got onto the worksheets on the blackboard.

5. Discuss with the students the results of their work and ask them to explain the functions of each type of e-portfolios. You may also ask them to translate their names into their native language to make sure that everybody understands the differences between these types.

6. Suggest that the students should compile their own e-portfolios, which will be a combination of the studied types. At the lesson, let the students work with the rubric “List of the Internet recourses.” For this, ask them to create PowerPoint presentations. Give the student several minutes to decide on the design and to organize the cover page.

7. Tell student to entitle one slide “List of the Internet resources” and to copy a chart from their handouts to this page.

8. Ask the students to do Internet searches to fill in the chart. Suggest that they should use popular search engines such as Google or Yahoo.

9. Let students share their findings.
